Vitamin B1 is a water-soluble vitamin that has a decisive influence on the central and peripheral nervous system in the body. It is particularly important for the transmission of excitation between nerves and muscles. The human body also needs vitamin B1 to metabolize nutrients, especially carbohydrates, from our food and convert them into energy.

If too little vitamin B1 is consumed, a vitamin B1 deficiency occurs, which can lead to serious disorders in the body. To prevent a vitamin B1 deficiency, it is particularly advisable to consume foods such as cereal products, pork, certain types of fish and pulses.
An adult's daily requirement of vitamin B1 is between 1.0 and 1.3 milligrams. The requirement can be slightly increased by stress, taking the contraceptive pill, alcoholism and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
The most common cause of a vitamin B1 deficiency is malnutrition and/or alcohol abuse. However, stress, smoking, competitive sport, taking the contraceptive pill and pregnancy also significantly increase the risk of vitamin B1 deficiency.
